William McLeish Smith (November 25, 1910 – March 7, 1967) was one of the major alto saxophone players of the swing era. He also played clarinet and sang.
==Early life==
Smith was born in Charleston, South Carolina,〔"Yesterday in Afro-American History". (November 27, 1969) ''Jet''. p. 11.〕 but raised in Cleveland, Ohio. His first instrument was clarinet and his education was in chemistry.〔 He received his chemistry degree from Fisk University.〔
